Instagramish Photo a Day May 8: Smells that I Adore

Today was nutty, especially since there was a citywide black out in the middle of the nuttiness. Anyway – I didn’t think anyone would get me photos of the smells they adore, so I went a little over board with everything I love.
Like coffee (Sumatra please.. made in a Turkish press):

And lilacs – my most favorite of weeds…I mean flowers. but come on, the thing grows like a weed.

and cilantro

And fire. I love the smell of fire and this particular fire makes pizza….yay!

Taryn did get me hers though. Says she: This Pastry shop smells like the most delicious frosting every day. Sam loves the smell of rain.  Kora loves the smell of apple pie (really, who doesn’t?)

Instagramish Photo-a-Day May 7: Someone who inspires you

I’m a little behind, but here’s yesterday’s challenge – someone who inspires you!

Taryn went literary:

I went political:

But we were both pretty feminist! Sam is is a feminist too. But his inspiration is someone who puts up with him every day (so she inspires us all). The beautiful Michelle:

Kora is a feminist too, but her inspiration is musical:

Today’s photo (to be posted later tonight) is: a smell  you adore. Tomorrow’s: something you do every day.

Instagramish Photo-a-Day May 6: YOU

This one was so interesting.

Karen is a teacher. And a good one. Her photo was shot on hour three of a Sunday afternoon tutoring session.

Taryn says of her shot It’s really hard to take a photo of yourself without feeling silly.  (good thing Taryn likes silly now and then, and I actually think this really captures her).

For me, I guess I’m the least clear on who I am. I don’t know if I’m my job, or the places I’ve been, or my best friends, or my mom, my dad, my sister,  the rest of my family, or the men I’ve loved and lost, but I guess I’m a bit of all of them…

Here is Kora:

Sam is late again, but I’ll plug his image of himself in as soon as it arrives.  YAY! Sam’s is in.

Tomorrow’s theme is “someone who inspires you.” I’ve told them it would be unseemly if they all used a photo of me (although it would be nice if someone did…anyone?)

Instagramish Photo-a-Day May 5: BIRD

Today’s theme was Bird.

My contribution this collection of robin’s eggs. A sure sign of spring. Seems they may not be cage free though….

Sam’s poached egg breakfast included a baby chick – tweet!

Taryn says: These birds of a feather live on the wall of my bedroom. I bought them at an antique shop in Salem, MA about 3 1/2 years ago. I think my entire bedroom has come together around them.

Karen chose a photo of her friend Byrd and his daughter Carter.  For the past three years Carter has been battling brain cancer with Byrd her constant companion.  A brave and proud father. Tomorrow’s theme: you! (join in if you want to! the more the merrier!)

Instagramish Photo-a-Day May 4 – FUN!

So today’s theme was fun! And fun was had. Taryn and I started the day at about 5am (Taryn started at 4:30) with a round of radio and tv interviews. By about 8am we were quite punchy, so the early morning Cinco de Mayo (or more accurately cuatro de Mayo) party going on at the adult contemporary station, complete with margaritas, tacos, and sombreros was really fun! They also had Juan Valdez style moustaches for all and after an early morning marg, it seemed to make a lot of sense to put one on (I’ve been wearing mine all day, despite generally spending a lot of money to ensure I don’t have a hairy upper lip).  This was fun!

Of course, as the day’s worn on, the early morning energy has lagged a bit. And when I pushed Taryn for her idea of fun, this is all she had left in her:  We convinced Kora to join us and, interestingly, her thoughts were a lot like Taryn’s: Thank goodness Sam slept in this morning. His idea of fun sometimes involves documenting fire hydrants – seriously – and he was quite thrilled with this one which also brings together our office love of cats and adorableness!  Tomorrow’s theme: Bird!

Run for the Roses (lime juice?)

Tomorrow is like a high holiday for me. It’s both Cinco de Mayo and the Kentucky Derby (please don’t talk to me about cruelty to animals. Believe me, I know. But I love the Derby for sentimental reasons. I will support the end of horse racing, and boxing for that matter, but for now, I will still cheer for the fillies and remember my father.)

Cinco de Mayo, a celebration of Mexican heritage, is really mostly interesting to me because it’s an excuse to impress one and all with my famous margaritas! Long a family favorite, my margaritas really took off after a few lessons in tequila from the very missed musical trail-blazer Nona Gainsforth. One very long night in one of Fort Smith, Arkansas’s many Mexican restaurants (I know, but they are all really good),  Nona walked me through the subtleties of the spirit and my drinking life has never been the same. Sipping tequila is a whole bag of knowledge, but for margaritas, the only real key is to buy one that is 100% blue agave. I tend to go with a reposado.  So, I’m giving away the secret recipe:

The Happy Girl Margarita (I’m trademarking the name): rub a lime along the outside of the marg glass and then dip the moistened rim in a coarse salt. Ice in the glass. Add tequila (see above) and triple sec in a 3 to 1 ratio. Squeeze in fresh lime (no Roses), and sometimes I do a little squeeze of fresh orange as well. That’s it. Deceptively easy, but so good. The first sip is usually tough for folks but by the end of the glass they’re naming their children after you.

But I won’t be drinking margaritas tomorrow. I’ll be having mint juleps and rooting for this to be the year of an all-white steed to win. Mint juleps are another misunderstood drink. I think most first time tasters expect something green and frothy, but it is a much more nuanced cocktail, though one with very few ingredients – sugar, mint, and bourbon (or whiskey or rye, but trust me, bourbon is the way to go). There’s lots of ways to combine the elements, my way is a bit more complicated, but I think yields the best outcome.

Drohan Derby Julep: Make a simple syrup (1:1 sugar and water heated until the sugar melts and the liquid thickens. I like to stick a mint leaf in there while I’m heating it as well, but fish it out after. Do not let it boil. After it cools a bit, put it in a glass container. If you make it in advance a couple drops of vodka will help it maintain consistency.) In a highball glass muddle a bit of mint at the bottom (spearmint is my STRONG preference). Fill the glass with ice. Add bourbon and simple syrup in a 31/2 to 1 ratio. Stir and garnish with a mint leaf. YUM!

Of course, the best part of the Derby are the hats! I’ve been working on mine all week and it involves a lot of ostrich feathers. Last fall some colleagues and I went to the races at Keeneland in Kentucky and we wore some of my other hat adventures. Here we are in what I call Fillies at the Post:

Intagramish Photo-a-Day May 3: Something I Wore

I’m starting with Sam today, because we’re all so pleased he’s finally sent me one (I’ve also updated his skyline).  He calls this Mai Thai:

Mine I shall call “If you like it.” I’ve worn these rings off and on for years. The thinner gold one is my great grandmother’s wedding ring (she had substantial fingers). The other is one that somehow made it to my jewelry box from that of my friend Lorelei. I remember that now, because when I saw her in NY a couple weeks ago she said “Oh, you still have my ring.” She didn’t ask for it back, and I love that it connects us and that I wear a piece of my family history alongside it.

Taryn is our office cat lady. She’s a pretty unlikely cat lady with her ankle tatoo and emo musical tastes, but she does have a not-so-hidden side that involves talking, thinking, writing about her cat. She even blogs about other adorable cats. And sometimes she dresses accordingly.

Karen is joining in on the fun. She says: When I wear these shoes I feel like I’m one of those people who puts effort into their look.

Tomorrow’s theme: FUN!
